Protecting the Growth of the Heart – Part 17

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 4 – Strengthening The Heart: Building a Heart That Lasts

Protecting the Growth of the Heart

In the discussion this morning, my colleagues discussed how we must reflect honestly on the state of our hearts. We asked the hard questions: Is my heart stronger? Do I feel closer to Allah? Have I truly grown this Ramadhan?

For many of us, hopefully the answer was yes. Alhamdulillah. We have grown. Our hearts have been softened, purified, and strengthened through weeks of fasting, prayer, and Quran.

But now we face a new challenge: protecting that growth. Because growth is vulnerable. The plant that has just sprouted is easily crushed. The flame that has just been lit is easily extinguished. And the heart that has just been renewed is easily attacked.

So now we speak about Protecting the Growth of the Heart.

The Enemy’s Strategy

Shaytan does not give up. He is patient. He has vowed:

“لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ”

“I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7: 16)

He attacks when we are most vulnerable. And spiritual highs are vulnerable moments. After intense worship, there is often a let-down. After climbing a mountain, there is a descent. This is when Shaytan strikes.

He whispers:

  • “You’ve done enough. Rest now.”
  • “Look at how much you’ve prayed. You’re better than others.”
  • “That sin is small. It won’t hurt after all your worship.”
  • “Tomorrow. You can start again tomorrow.”

These whispers are designed to undo everything you have built.

The Greatest Danger: Riya’ (Showing Off)

In the last ten nights, as worship intensifies, the danger of riya’ increases. When others see you praying, fasting, giving charity, the ego whispers: They are impressed. They see how devoted you are. This poison can destroy the entire reward.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ” قَالُوا: وَمَا الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: “الرِّيَاءُ”

“Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk.” They asked: “What is the lesser shirk, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Showing off.” (Ahmad)

Protect your heart by keeping your worship secret. Pray at night when no one sees. Give charity secretly. Let your left hand not know what your right hand gives. Guard your intentions constantly.

The Danger of Complacency

Another danger is complacency. After weeks of effort, fatigue sets in. The excitement fades. The body tires. And the whisper comes: You’ve done enough. Take a break. You can slow down now.

But the last ten nights are not the time to slow down. They are the time to accelerate. The Prophet ﷺ would increase his worship in the last ten nights, not decrease.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

“كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَجْتَهِدُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مَا لَا يَجْتَهِدُ فِي غَيْرِهِ”

“The Messenger of Allah would strive in the last ten days more than he would at any other time.” (Muslim)

Do not let fatigue rob you of Laylatul Qadr.

The Danger of Distraction

The last ten nights are also a time when distractions multiply. Family gatherings for Eid preparations. Shopping. Social plans. The mind wanders to what comes after Ramadhan.

Protect your focus. Remember why you are here. These nights are a once-a-year opportunity. One night of sincere worship is better than a thousand months. Do not let distractions steal that from you.

How to Protect Your Heart

  1. Renew your intention daily. Every night, before you begin worship, say: I am doing this for Allah alone. I seek His pleasure. I seek Laylatul Qadr.
  2. Hide your good deeds. Do not announce your night prayers. Do not mention how much Quran you read. Protect your rewards from the gaze of people.
  3. Make du’a for steadfastness. The Prophet ﷺ taught us:

“يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ”

“O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.” (Tirmidhi)

Ask the Turner of hearts to keep your heart turned toward Him.

  1. Limit distractions. Reduce screen time. Postpone unnecessary tasks. Create space for worship. The less you engage with the dunya, the more your heart will focus on Allah.
  2. Remember the goal. You are not just trying to “get through” the last ten nights. You are seeking Laylatul Qadr. You are seeking forgiveness. You are seeking freedom from the Fire. Keep this goal front and centre.

The Promise of Protection

Allah protects those who protect their worship. He guards the hearts of those who guard their intentions. He completes what He started in you.

“إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ”

“Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remained steadfast, the angels descend upon them.” (Surah Fussilat, 41:30)

Steadfastness brings angels. Steadfastness brings peace. Steadfastness brings protection.

My brothers and sisters, you have grown this month. Do not let that growth be stolen. Protect it with intention, with secrecy, with du’a, and with focus. The last ten nights are your opportunity to seal this growth with the ultimate prize: Laylatul Qadr and forgiveness.

May Allah protect our hearts and grant us the best of these last ten nights. Ameen.
