The Qurtuba Islamic Academy (QIA) is set to host a parenting convention tomorrow, the 9th of September. This event, which will take place from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, aims to empower parents with essential skills, focusing specifically on the challenges of raising teenagers in today’s world.
In an interview on Radio Islam International, Moulana Muhammad Coovadia from QIA explained that the idea behind this convention stems from the belief that a strong future for the ummah relies heavily on having strong children, and to have strong children, we need excellent parents. The Qurtuba Islamic Academy created a platform where parents can gather for a single day to enhance their parenting techniques and gain valuable insights from experts.
Moulana Coovadia charted the lineup of sessions, each addressing crucial aspects of parenting teenagers. Here’s a glimpse of what attendees can expect:
- Educational journey as parents: Muallima Shakira Hunter will explore the challenges and opportunities parents face when guiding their children through their education.
- Discipline diaries: Shuhaida Adam from Islamic Careline will delve into the art of discipline and how to guide teenagers back onto the right path.
- Adulthood and maturity: Apa Rehana Shah Bulbulia and Moulana Abdul Rahman Laily will discuss the transition to adulthood and the necessary skills parents should impart to their children.
- Building resilience: Ahmed Mayet, a clinical psychologist, will tackle the topic of resiliency, equipping children to face life’s challenges.
- Addressing sensitive issues: Moulana Muhammad Coovadia will shed light on suicide and self-harm.
- Prophetic parenting: Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim will deliver a virtual discussion on guidance from the greats, drawing from prophetic practices to guide parents.
- Identity formation: Dr Yumna Minty will explore the creation of an Islamic identity in children and the impact of peer pressure and bullying on children’s identity
- Tech-savvy parenting: Bilal Kathrada will provide insights into managing technology in the family, including essential applications for monitoring online activity.
- Harmony in the home: Moulana Sulaimaan Rawat will discuss the roles of parents in creating a harmonious family environment.
- Sheikh Wael Ibrahim will address masturbation and pornography, while Rafiq Mayet will speak on the challenges of drugs and smoking.
- Effective communication: Idris Khamisa will close the event by addressing the importance of communication habits between teenagers and their parents.
Tickets for the convention are priced at R250, which includes live attendance, access to selected recordings, lunch, morning and afternoon tea.
