The official opening of the Wits Roy McAlpine Burns Unit on Monday is good news for burn patients.
The unit is situated at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, which was expanded with an R100 million donation.
The unit also features a new theatre, a state-of-the-art teaching lab, six additional adult beds (bringing the total to 12), and four more paediatric beds (increasing the count to 11).
News24 reported that the Roy McAlpine Foundation donated R70m to fund the project, while the university provided the rest.
Professor Adelin Muganza, Head of the Unit at CHBAH, said the new addition would be tremendously helpful in solving their problems.
“Our challenges have been a limited number of beds, especially in the ICU, and we previously had limited time for operations, and some delays in surgery because of the high volume of patients,” he says.
He added that the unit has provided services to more than 30,000 patients and performed more than 40,000 burn-related procedures over the years.
Professor Muganza emphasizes that the new facilities will significantly improve patient outcomes and ensure timely and effective treatment, providing the audience with reassurance about the quality of care.
