Stronger Together – Part 2

The Power of Us

Stronger Together

This week, we are exploring the theme “The Power of Us” — a reminder that each of us has a role to play in shaping the world around us.

Yesterday, we spoke about how small actions can have a big impact. Today, we take that idea a step further and look at what happens when those actions extend beyond ourselves and become part of how we treat our families, our neighbours and our wider communities.

Think about it for a moment. What makes a community a good place to live? Is it simply the houses, the roads, the shops and the facilities? Or is it also the people who live there, the way they treat one another and whether they are willing to stand together when someone needs help?

We can live in the same neighbourhood for years without really knowing the people around us. We can pass someone who is struggling without noticing. We can complain about problems in our communities while assuming that somebody else will take responsibility for fixing them.

But a strong community is not built by infrastructure alone. It is also built through relationships, trust, compassion and a shared sense of responsibility.

So today, our question is: What happens when we stop thinking only about ourselves and start thinking about the people around us?

  1. Why do we need one another?

We live in a world that often encourages individual success. We are told to work hard, achieve our goals, provide for our families and build a better future for ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with working towards personal goals. But the problem begins when our own needs become the only things we consider.

The reality is that none of us lives entirely independently of others. We depend on people in countless ways, often without even realising it. Our families support us, teachers educate us, workers provide essential services, and members of our communities contribute to the places we call home.

And at different stages of life, every one of us may need help.

Today, we might be the person offering support. Tomorrow, we might be the person who needs it.

Recognising this should make us more willing to show understanding, generosity and consideration towards others.

A strong community is not one in which nobody ever struggles. It is one in which people do not have to face every struggle alone.

  1. What does Islam teach us about supporting one another?

Islam places great emphasis on caring for others and working together for what is good.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ ۚ

“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:2

This verse gives us an important principle. We should support one another in what is good, beneficial and pleasing to Allah.

That support can take many forms. It may mean assisting a family in difficulty, helping someone access education, contributing to a community initiative, offering useful advice or standing up for someone who is being treated unfairly.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us about the importance of mutual support.

He said:

 وَاللَّهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ

“Allah is in the aid of His servant as long as the servant is in the aid of his brother.” — Sahih Muslim, 2699

Consider the message here. When we make an effort to help others, we are not simply performing a social duty. We are engaging in an act of goodness that has spiritual significance.

We should therefore ask ourselves: Are we looking for opportunities to benefit others, or are we waiting until someone approaches us for help?

Sometimes, the greatest contribution we can make is to notice a need and respond with sincerity.

Conclusion

As we continue with our theme, “The Power of Us,” let us remember that we are not simply individuals living alongside one another. We are part of families and communities, and our actions influence those around us.

We cannot solve every problem, but we can make a conscious effort to bring some benefit to others.

So, here is something to reflect on today:

Are we simply living in our communities, or are we actively helping to build them?

Because stronger communities begin when individuals recognise the part they can play.

And that is the Power of Us.
