Tawbah: Returning to Allah – Part 4

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 3 – Cleansing the Soul: Letting Go to Grow

Tawbah: Returning to Allah

Yesterday we completed a difficult but essential task. We diagnosed the sicknesses of the heart. We named our diseases: Pride, Envy, Anger, Heedlessness. And we confronted the terrifying reality of what happens when we ignore them.

If you were left feeling heavy-hearted, feeling the weight of your spiritual condition — good. That weight is called life. A dead heart feels nothing. A living heart feels the burden of its sins and seeks relief.

And today, we begin the journey of relief. Today, we speak about the greatest gift Allah has given His sinful servants. We speak about Tawbah: Returning to Allah.

What is Tawbah? In Arabic, it comes from the root tāba, which means to return. Tawbah is not just saying “Astaghfirullah.” It is not a mechanical utterance of the tongue. It is the soul turning around and heading back to its Creator after wandering in the wilderness of sin.

Allah ﷻ commands us:

“وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ”

“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.” (Surah An-Nur, 24: 31)

Notice the connection. Repentance leads to success (Falāḥ). There is no true success without a clean heart. And there is no clean heart without Tawbah.

The beauty of Islam is that the door of repentance is always open. Always. No matter how great the sin, no matter how many times you have repeated it, no matter how far you have strayed — the door remains open until the moment of death. Allah declares:

“قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا”

“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

Read the address carefully. He does not say “O righteous servants.” He says “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves.” This is directed at the sinners. At those who have failed. At those who carry the weight of their mistakes. To them, Allah says: Do not despair.

This is the essence of Tawbah. It is not about being perfect. It is about never giving up on returning.

The Prophet ﷺ gave us the most hopeful message:

“كُلُّ بَنِي آدَمَ خَطَّاءٌ وَخَيْرُ الْخَطَّائِينَ التَّوَّابُونَ”

“Every son of Adam sins, and the best of sinners are those who constantly repent.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Notice: The best are not those who never sin. The best are those who sin and then return. Who fall and then rise. Who stumble and then seek His hand.

Why is Tawbah so powerful? Because it does not just erase sins — it transforms them. The scholars mention that sincere repentance can actually turn one’s sins into good deeds. Allah says:

“إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا فَأُولَٰئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ”

“Except those who repent, believe, and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good.” (Surah Al-Furqan, 25: 70)

Imagine! The very sins that weigh you down can become sources of elevation if they lead you to sincere return.

But Tawbah is not magic. It is work. It requires the heart to feel, the tongue to confess, and the limbs to change.

The early Muslims understood this deeply. When one of them committed a sin, they would not move on until they had repented sincerely. They would weep. They would isolate themselves. They would increase their good deeds. Not because they doubted Allah’s mercy, but because they understood the gravity of disobeying the One they loved.

This Ramadhan, let us make Tawbah our constant companion. Let us return to Allah not once, but again and again. Every time we slip, every time we fail, every time we feel the distance — let us turn around and run back to Him.

For He is not only the One we have disobeyed. He is the One waiting for our return.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“لَلَّهُ أَفْرَحُ بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ سَقَطَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَقَدْ أَضَلَّهُ فِي أَرْضٍ فَلَاةٍ”

“Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you who finds his camel after losing it in a barren land.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Imagine that joy. The joy of being saved from certain death. That is Allah’s joy when you return to Him.

Do not delay. Do not despair. Return now.

Do not wait until you are saying these words from the brink of death. Return now, while return is accepted.

May Allah make us among those who constantly repent, who are beloved to Him as the frequent repenters. Ameen.
