In this week’s Africa Report on Radio Islam International, John Bwasa, an academic with a Bachelor of Honours in Education, shared his perspectives on crucial issues affecting the African continent.
Elections in Africa: A farce or a reality?
Bwasa expressed scepticism about the legitimacy of elections across Africa, emphasising that they often fall short of addressing the citizens’ true aspirations. He cited recent events in Madagascar and Chad, questioning whether these electoral processes genuinely reflect the needs of the people. He raised concerns about the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, highlighting biases in the electoral process and the lack of substantial proposals from candidates.
Breaking dependency to embrace dignity: A necessity for Africa
Discussing the historical context, Bwasa pointed to the 1885 Berlin Conference and the subsequent challenges faced by the African continent. He stressed the importance of breaking dependency on foreign aid and fostering unity within Africa. Bwasa advocated for collaborative efforts, citing initiatives like a single monetary currency and breaking down borders as steps toward a more dignified and self-sufficient Africa.
Ethical leadership: A call for change
Bwasa emphasised the need for a revamped education system to instil morality, ethics, and values in future leaders. He criticised leaders who prioritise personal gain over the well-being of their citizens and urged for a return to African roots, including cultural and spiritual aspects. Bwasa proposed involving civil society to challenge leadership and rebuild institutions that prioritise the people’s needs.
