The Community We Deserve Begins With Us – Part 2

Your Vote. Your Voice. Your Responsibility.

The Community We Deserve Begins With Us

Let us begin with a simple question: If you could change one thing about the community in which you live, what would it be?

Would it be the condition of the roads? The reliability of water and electricity services? The safety of your neighbourhood? The state of public spaces? Or would it be the hope that one day, our communities could offer better opportunities and a better quality of life for the generations growing up in them?

Whatever your answer may be, there is something important to recognise: the quality of our local communities is not a distant political issue. It is something we experience in our daily lives.

It affects how we travel to work, how our children access public facilities, how businesses operate and how families go about their everyday routines.

This is precisely why local government elections matter.

Municipalities have responsibilities that directly affect the lives of residents, including important aspects of water and sanitation, refuse removal, municipal roads, electricity distribution where applicable, public spaces and local planning. The exact responsibilities vary according to the municipality and the service involved.

When these services function well, communities benefit. When they do not, residents can experience real difficulties.

And when election day approaches, we are given an opportunity to consider who should represent us and how our municipalities should be governed.

But here is where we must ask ourselves a difficult question: Are we choosing representatives based on what our communities genuinely need, or are we allowing other things to distract us from those needs?

Are we examining policies, performance, promises and plans? Are we asking how problems will be addressed and how progress will be measured? Or are we simply following familiar names, political loyalties and whatever happens to be circulating on social media?

These are not insignificant questions. They go to the heart of responsible citizenship.

A promise is easy to make. Delivering on that promise requires planning, resources, competent administration and accountability. That is why we should look beyond campaign slogans and consider what candidates and parties propose, what they have demonstrated and whether their commitments are realistic.

We should also remember that no municipality can solve every problem overnight. Some challenges are complex, some require cooperation between different levels of government, and some depend on available resources. Understanding these realities does not mean accepting poor performance without question. It means asking informed questions and expecting honest answers.

Accountability begins when citizens refuse to stop asking questions simply because an election is over.

Yet there is another side to this discussion that deserves our attention.

We often speak about the community we want, but how often do we consider the part we play in creating it?

We may want clean streets, yet keeping public spaces clean also requires responsible behaviour from residents. We may want safe neighbourhoods, yet building safer communities can involve cooperation, reporting problems through appropriate channels and looking out for one another. We may want our children to grow up with respect and responsibility, but those values must also be demonstrated in our own conduct.

None of this removes the obligations of government or excuses the failure to provide essential services. Rather, it reminds us that responsible leadership and responsible citizenship must exist alongside one another.

A municipality must fulfil its duties. Elected representatives must listen and be accountable. Residents must have the opportunity to raise concerns, seek information and participate in decisions affecting their communities.

Each has a role to play, and those roles should not be confused.

So, what should we do as we prepare to vote?

We should identify the issues that matter most in our own neighbourhoods. We should find reliable information about the candidates and parties seeking our support. We should ask what solutions they propose, how they intend to implement them and how residents will be able to assess their progress.

And after the elections, we should remain engaged. We can raise service-delivery concerns, attend relevant public meetings, follow municipal decisions and use the appropriate channels to seek answers.

Because voting should not be the final expression of our interest in the community. It should be the beginning of continued participation.

As we approach election day, let us remember that a community is more than a collection of houses, roads and municipal boundaries. It is a place where people build their lives, raise their families, earn their livelihoods and hope for a better future.

The community we want tomorrow depends, in part, on the choices we make today and the responsibilities we are prepared to uphold afterwards.
