Post Ramadhan: From Peak Moments to a Lifetime of Connection
The Day of Eid and Beyond: A Friday of Gratitude and Vision
We have reached the end of our week together. It is Friday — the best day on which the sun has risen. And this Friday is special. It is not like the Fridays of Ramadhan, when we were in the thick of fasting and nightly prayers. This Friday marks a transition. It is the first Jumu’ah after Eid, the first Friday of Shawwal, and for many of us, it is the first time we will gather in the Masjid after the spiritual whirlwind of the past month.
Today is not just a day to reflect on what we have lost. Today is a day to thank Allah for what we have gained, and to set our sights on the road ahead.
A Friday of Gratitude
The Prophet ï·º said: “The first thing that will be taken from this nation is gratitude.” (Al-Bazzar). Do not let that happen to us.
We spent thirty days in a month of mercy, forgiveness, and salvation from the Fire. Allah allowed us to witness Ramadhan. He gave us the strength to fast. He enabled us to stand in prayer. He allowed us to taste the sweetness of His remembrance. These are not small blessings. These are gifts that many people — even among those who call themselves Muslim — did not receive.
So today, on this blessed Friday, we must begin with hamd — praise. Let us say with full hearts:
Alhamdulillah illadhi bi ni’matihi tatimmu as-salihat — All praise is due to Allah, by whose blessings good deeds are completed.
Your fasts were completed. Your nights of prayer were completed. Your Quran was completed. This was from Allah, not from your own strength.
The Friday Before Ramadhan vs. The Friday After Ramadhan
Think back to the Friday before Ramadhan. Do you remember it? There was anticipation. There was preparation. We were making lists, setting goals, praying for the month to reach us.
This Friday is different. The preparation is over. The month has come and gone. But I want to suggest that this Friday is just as important. The Friday before Ramadhan was for preparing to enter a spiritual state. This Friday is for planning how to remain in it.
The scholars say that the one whose state after Ramadhan is better than before Ramadhan is the one whose Ramadhan was truly accepted. If you left Ramadhan with a softer heart, a stronger prayer, a deeper connection to Quran, then thank Allah — but do not stop there. Ask Him to keep you that way until you meet Him.
Du’a: The Key to Remaining Firm
One of the most powerful acts we can do today is make du’a for steadfastness. The Prophet ï·º taught us a du’a that we should recite often:
“Ya muqallibal qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala deenik” — O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion. (Tirmidhi)
Notice the language. The Prophet ï·º did not say “my heart is firm, so I am fine.” He acknowledged that hearts are in the hands of Allah. They turn. They fluctuate. And he asked the One who controls the heart to keep it steady.
Let this be your constant du’a today and in the days to come. Do not be arrogant about your spiritual state. What you have today can be gone tomorrow if Allah wills. So ask Him with humility to keep you on the straight path.
