The Decoy Effect – Part 3

Invisible Forces that Shape our Day

The Decoy Effect

So far this week we’ve talked about routines and social contagion — two invisible forces that shape our behaviour without us realising. Today we look at a third, and this one is particularly clever: The Decoy Effect.

The Decoy Effect sounds technical, but you have experienced it hundreds of times. It works like this: when you are choosing between two options, the arrival of a third, less attractive option can suddenly make one of the first two seem much better. That third option is called the decoy — and its only job is to trick your brain.

Let me give you a clear example. Imagine you are at a coffee shop and you see two sizes: small for R20 and large for R50. You might pause. Do you really need the large? Then the menu shows a third option: medium for R48. Suddenly the large at R50 looks like incredible value — just R2 more for much more coffee. The medium was never meant to be chosen. It was the decoy. Its only purpose was to push you toward the large.

Or consider magazine subscriptions online. You see: digital only for R100, print only for R150, and digital plus print for R155. Who would choose print only for R150 when for R5 more you get both? Exactly. The print-only option is the decoy. It makes the combined offer look like a steal.

This is not an accident. It is a carefully designed invisible force used by marketers, restaurants, phone companies, and even real estate agents. And it works because the human brain does not judge value in a vacuum. We judge value by comparison. Allah created us with the ability to compare — but comparison can also be exploited.

Now here is the important part for us as Muslims. The Decoy Effect is not just about shopping. The same invisible force can operate in our life decisions — and if we are not careful, it can lead us away from what is truly good.

Think about marriage. A person might be considering two potential spouses. Then a third person enters the picture — flashy, charming, but not necessarily righteous. Suddenly, the quieter, more religious candidate seems less exciting by comparison. The third person acted as a decoy, changing the standard of judgment.

Think about wealth. A person is content with their halal income. Then they see a friend take a shortcut to earn more — through interest, through bribery, through dubious means. That friend’s wealth becomes a decoy. Suddenly the halal income feels small and slow, even though it is blessed.

Think about time. You plan to spend your evening reading Qur’an or studying something beneficial. Then someone offers you a mediocre TV show. Suddenly the Qur’an feels like effort, and the TV show feels like rest — not because the show is good, but because it sits in the middle as a decoy between you and something better.

Allah ﷻ warns us about the danger of false comparisons. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20,

وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ

He reminds us that worldly things — wealth, children, status — are merely mata’ul ghuroor, “an illusion of pleasure.” They are often decoys distracting us from what truly matters.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a powerful tool to fight this invisible force. He said:

“Look to those below you, and do not look to those above you, for that is more likely to keep you from despising Allah’s blessing upon you.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Notice the wisdom. The decoy effect works by making something else look better. So the Prophet ﷺ taught us to deliberately change our comparison point — not upwards towards decoys, but downwards towards gratitude.

So how do we protect ourselves from the Decoy Effect? Three simple steps.

First, know your values before you choose. Decide what matters to you — halal, barakah, character, sincerity — before the decoys appear. A clear value system is like a shield.

Second, ask “why” a third option exists. When you see an extra choice that seems strangely placed, pause. Ask yourself: is this here to help me or to nudge me?

Third, make istikharah a habit. When you involve Allah in your decisions, He protects you from the illusions that deceive others.

The Decoy Effect is invisible, but it is not invincible. With awareness and reliance on Allah, you can see through the tricks and choose what truly benefits your Deen and your dunya.
