The Legacy We Leave Behind – Part 5

The Power of Us

Over the past few days, we have explored the theme “The Power of Us.” We began by looking at how small actions can make a big impact. We then discussed the importance of building stronger communities, respecting our differences and taking responsibility for our actions.

Today, we bring these ideas together by asking an important question: What are we leaving behind for the next generation?

When we hear the word legacy, we often think of wealth, property, achievements or something significant that people leave behind after they pass away. But a legacy is not only about what we own or accomplish. It is also about the values we teach, the example we set and the difference we make in the lives of others.

The question is not simply what we will leave behind, but what we are building through the way we live today.

  1. What does it mean to leave a legacy?

Every day, whether we realise it or not, we influence the people around us.

Children observe how adults speak to others, handle disagreements and respond when someone needs help. Young people notice whether honesty is practised or merely preached. Our communities are shaped by the behaviour we accept, encourage and repeat.

We may not all become famous or achieve extraordinary things, but we all have opportunities to leave something meaningful behind.

A parent who teaches kindness, a teacher who encourages a struggling learner, or a person who consistently treats others with dignity may influence lives for years to come.

Sometimes, the most important legacy is not something people can see or touch. It is a value they carry forward because someone took the time to teach it to them.

  1. What does Islam teach us about leaving behind good?

Islam encourages us to look beyond our immediate needs and consider the lasting impact of our actions. Allah says in the Qur’an:

وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ

“And whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah.” Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:110

This reminds us that our good deeds have lasting significance. The benefit of a sincere act may extend beyond the moment in which it is performed.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said:

“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him.” Sahih Muslim, 1631

This hadith highlights three examples of good that can continue to benefit a person beyond their lifetime.

We can contribute to lasting good through charitable projects, sharing beneficial knowledge and raising children with sound values. More broadly, it encourages us to think about how our efforts can benefit others long after we have moved on.

We should therefore ask ourselves: Are we only concerned with what we can gain today, or are we also thinking about the good we can leave for tomorrow?

  1. What can we do today to shape tomorrow?

We do not need to wait until we are older, wealthier or more influential to make a difference.

We can share knowledge, support someone who is learning, encourage young people, contribute to beneficial causes and demonstrate good character in our daily interactions.

We can also reflect honestly on our own example. Are our actions consistent with the values we say we believe in? Are we helping to create the kind of environment we hope future generations will experience?

Every generation inherits something from the one before it. We have a responsibility to consider what we are passing on.

Conclusion

As we conclude our week under the theme “The Power of Us,” let us remember that a meaningful legacy is not reserved for a select few.

It is built through the choices we make, the people we help, the knowledge we share and the values we practise.

We may never know how far our positive influence will reach, but we can choose to make that influence worthwhile.

Let us strive to leave behind more than possessions or memories. Let us leave behind goodness, beneficial knowledge, compassion and examples worth following.

Because the world of tomorrow is shaped, in part, by what we choose to do today.

And that is the Power of Us.
