The seminar is part of a campaign initiated by Healthcare Workers for Palestine and aims to highlight the healthcare crisis in Gaza. Despite initial setbacks, it is set to take place on March 6, 2024, at Stellenbosch University, offering both physical and virtual attendance options.
According to Professor Usuf Chikte, the seminar, organised by the faculty of medicine and health sciences, was initially rejected by the dean of the university. However, after concerted efforts from the faculty members and engagement with the rectorate and Academic Freedom Committee, the ban was overturned.
“I’m pleased to say that the rectorate and the dean came together and asserted our right to have a seminar, and that seminar is going to take place on Wednesday, and I’d like to ask your listeners to join in that seminar, on the 6th of March,” Professor Chikte says.
Professor Hassan Mahomed, a public health medicine specialist at Stellenbosch University, will facilitate discussions about the current state of healthcare in Gaza. Included in the list of speakers are Dr Edward Chu, an emergency medicine physician who recently worked in Gaza for Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF), and Mr Alaa Hathleen, a physiotherapist from Hebron, Palestine.
Professor Chikte urges listeners to join the seminar and underscores the importance of amplifying the voices of Palestinian people.
Details of the seminar are as follows:
Date: 6 March 2024
Time: 16:30-17:30 SAST
Venue: Lecture Hall 2, Education Building, Tygerberg Medical Campus
