What you didn’t know about cloud storage

By Naseerah Nanabhai

Cloud storage is the latest way of exchanging files and accessing them at different locations, without material drives. It allows the opportunity to download your files to a server and access them at any time from any device. While it does come with this great ease of access advantage, there are some things worth noting about safely using cloud storage. Below is a list of things to consider:

  • Do not store sensitive information in the cloud – Avoid uploading items that contain passwords, addresses, or credit card numbers. If you need to upload these items, encrypt them beforehand.
  • Encryption – This will not allow anyone to access files without typing in a password. Even if your cloud storage automatically encrypts files, you should encrypt your data on your own.
  • Ensure that you enable two-factor authentication- This ensures that only authorised personnel can log onto your cloud storage. It works by issuing an OTP every time you log on to verify your identity and block malicious attempts.
  • Thoroughly analyse your cloud storage provider’s – By taking a moment to do this, you will be made fully aware of the risks involved; you will know where your data is stored and what would happen if anything is compromised.
  • Make use of a reliable antivirus – Even if you use a secure service provider for cloud storage, a compromised computer system can pose a problem. Make sure you have a comprehensive antivirus installed, avoid untrustworthy web locations, be aware of cyber-attacks delivered via phishing emails, infected banners, spam emails, social engineering attempts, and more.
