Why Ignoring Heart Diseases Is Dangerous
In the two discussions this morning we diagnosed the sicknesses of the heart. We have named them: Pride, Envy, Anger, Heedlessness. We have understood their symptoms and their destructive nature. But now we must address a question that is absolutely critical: What happens if we ignore them?
Because here is the uncomfortable truth. Most of us know we have these diseases. We know we carry pride in our hearts. We know we envy others. We know we struggle with anger. We know we are heedless. But we do nothing about it. We assume it will somehow be fine. We assume Allah will forgive us anyway.
This assumption is dangerous. It is deadly. And it contradicts the very purpose of Ramadhan.
Allah ﷻ warns us about the consequences of ignoring spiritual disease:
“فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا”
“In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 10)
This is the first danger: Diseases grow when ignored. A small amount of pride, left unchecked, becomes arrogance. A twinge of envy, left untreated, becomes malice. Occasional anger becomes a permanent rage. Moments of heedlessness become a life of forgetfulness.
Spiritual diseases are not static. They are like cancer. They metastasize. They spread from one part of the heart to another. Pride leads to arrogance toward Allah. Envy leads to backbiting and slander. Anger leads to broken families. Heedlessness leads to abandoning prayers entirely.
The Prophet ﷺ described the gradual corruption of the heart:
“تُعْرَضُ الْفِتَنُ عَلَى الْقُلُوبِ كَالْحَصِيرِ عُودًا عُودًا، فَأَيُّ قَلْبٍ أُشْرِبَهَا نُكِتَ فِيهِ نُكْتَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ”
“Trials are presented to the hearts like a mat woven straw by straw. Any heart that absorbs them will have a black spot placed in it.” (Sahih Muslim)
One sin leads to another. One disease invites another. Until the heart becomes completely black, unable to recognize good or reject evil.
The second danger is: A diseased heart cannot receive guidance.
Imagine trying to pour pure water into a dirty container. The water becomes contaminated. Similarly, when the heart is diseased, even acts of worship become corrupted. A prideful person prays, but his prayer does not elevate him because he is performing it for show. An envious person fasts, but his fast does not purify him because his heart is burning with resentment. A heedless person reads Quran, but the words do not penetrate because his heart is locked.
Allah says:
“أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا”
“Then do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Surah Muhammad, 47: 24)
The locks are the diseases. They seal the heart. They prevent the light from entering.
The third danger is the most terrifying: A diseased heart becomes hard, then dead.
Allah describes those who ignored their spiritual condition:
“ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَهِيَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً”
“Then your hearts became hardened after that, so they were like stones, or even harder.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 74
A hard heart does not cry. It does not soften at the mention of Allah. It does not feel remorse for sin. It hears warnings of Hellfire and remains unmoved. It hears promises of Paradise and feels no longing.
And eventually, if left untreated, the heart dies completely. A dead heart is the worst state a human can reach. It prays mechanically. It sins without guilt. It goes through life, accumulating years, but accumulating nothing for the Hereafter.
My brothers and sisters, imagine standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment. Imagine Him asking: I gave you Ramadhan. I gave you thirty days of mercy. I opened the doors of Paradise. I closed the doors of Hell. I gave you the chance to diagnose and heal your heart. What did you do?
Do not let that be your story.
If you feel something when you sin—discomfort, guilt, regret—praise Allah. Your heart is alive. But if you have normalized your sins, if you no longer feel the weight of your pride or envy or anger, then you are in danger.
The cure is urgent. It is now. It is this Ramadhan.
Do not forget Allah. Do not ignore your diseases. Do not let your heart die.
Wake up. Diagnose. Treat. Heal. While there is still time.
May Allah protect our hearts from hardening and grant us soundness before we meet Him. Ameen.
