While the thought of visiting some of our country’s most desirable destinations may be more appealing during warmer months, who says we have to hibernate indoors with blankets and heaters all through until spring? Travelling in winter might not be the same as sunny summer vacations. Still, it does have some perks, such as cheaper winter specials, a range of different activities and less crowded destinations. Here are some of the top winter destinations our country has to offer:
Durban
The intense humidity of its summer months causes Durban’s winter weather to be idyllically mild, making it an ideal retreat during the chilly season. Temperatures are high enough for pleasant beach days and enjoyable aqua activities. If you are lucky, you might even catch the real deal sardine run during July. Visiting Durban in winter and getting to experience the magnificent south coast without the summer crowds is undoubtedly a great idea of bliss.
Nelspruit
Nelspruit is certainly another tropical winter hotspot; while the morning and evenings may be a bit chilly, the daytime offers mild weather close to summer-like temperatures. Barberton
This little former gold-mining town sports a charming set of period buildings, historical walks, interesting people, majestic vistas and some best-preserved ancient rocks on earth. Rhodes
While half the adventure of visiting this place might be in getting there, Rhodes is considered a fairy-tale historical village. The town is characterized by quaint Victorian architecture and country village charm, many artists call it home, and it is a perfect place to shop for artworks. Some attractions in the region include Rhodes River Park, Wartrail Country Club and Tiffindell Skiing. While soaring high up in the highlands of the Drakensberg doesn’t allow one to escape the chills of winter, it does allow one to experience the occasional regal winter snowfall.
