Choosing Friends Who Bring Out Your Best – Part 2

Friends for Life

Choosing Friends Who Bring Out Your Best

Yesterday, we spoke about why friendship matters more than ever in today’s world. We reflected on the blessing of having people who walk alongside us through life’s highs and lows, and we were reminded that true friendship is measured not by numbers, but by sincerity, loyalty, and genuine care.

Today, I’d like us to think about an important question:

How do we choose our friends?

There’s a saying that goes, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” While it may sound simple, there’s a great deal of truth in those words. Whether we realise it or not, the people we spend the most time with influence the way we think, speak, behave, and even dream.

Human beings naturally adapt to their environment. If we’re surrounded by people who are optimistic, honest, hardworking, and compassionate, those qualities begin to rub off on us. But if we’re constantly in the company of negativity, gossip, dishonesty, or unhealthy habits, those influences can slowly become part of our own character.

Often, this doesn’t happen overnight. It’s usually gradual. Small conversations become shared attitudes. Shared attitudes become habits. Habits eventually shape our character.

That’s why choosing our circle wisely is one of the most important decisions we make.

Think about the people in your life.

  • Who encourages you when you want to give up?
  • Who celebrates your successes without jealousy?
  • Who gently tells you when you’re making a mistake instead of simply agreeing with everything you say?

Those are the people worth holding onto.

A true friend isn’t someone who tells you only what you want to hear. A true friend is someone who cares enough to tell you what you need to hear, always with kindness and respect.

Sometimes we mistake popularity for friendship. We think having a large circle means we’re rich in relationships. But life has a way of teaching us that during difficult moments, it’s often only a handful of people who remain by our side.

Quality will always matter more than quantity.

From an Islamic perspective, this lesson is beautifully emphasised by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who said:

“A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a friend.”

This hadith is not simply about religion in the narrow sense. It reminds us that our closest companions shape our values, priorities, and direction in life. The company we keep influences our language, our outlook, our ambitions, and even our relationship with Allah.

It’s also worth asking ourselves another important question:

  • What kind of friend am I attracting?
  • Very often, we seek loyal friends, but are we loyal ourselves?
  • We look for honest people, but are we honest?
  • We want friends who encourage us, but do we encourage others?

The friendships we build are often a reflection of the values we live by.

As parents, this discussion carries another important message. Our children and young people are constantly influenced by the company they keep, whether at school, on sports fields, online, or through social media. Rather than simply telling them to avoid bad influences, perhaps we should also encourage them to become the kind of friend others admire — someone known for kindness, integrity, respect, and good character.

Adults aren’t immune to this either. Even in the workplace or our communities, the people we surround ourselves with can either inspire us to grow or slowly pull us away from our goals and values.

There’s an old proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” But perhaps we could add one more thought:

Go together with the right people.

  • The right friends won’t compete with your success — they’ll celebrate it.
  • They won’t encourage your weaknesses — they’ll help you overcome them.
  • They won’t disappear when life becomes difficult — they’ll remind you that you’re not facing your challenges alone.

As we continue our week on friendship, perhaps today is a good day to quietly reflect on the people who have the greatest influence in our lives.
