Colours in Islam: Hajj 1443

By Neelam Rahim

Radio Islam’s Ml Suliman Ravat and Ml Waja discuss colours in Islam.

Nabi Muhammed [SAW] has mostly worn and also emphasised the virtue of the colour white. “Wear white clothing because it is more Taahir [pure] and clean. And clothe your dead in white.”

Ml Suliman shares with us, “On the occasion of Uhud, the angels came to help the Muslims, and there were two young men, handsome looking to the right and left of Nabi [SAW] dressed in white and later on Nabi [SAW] said these are the angels, so it’s an angelic colour.”

“White, they say, gives you a sense of innocence, a sense of being wholesome and complete. White contains all the other colours in the spectrum. People who wear white regularly are well balanced, optimistic and then psychologically the colour white is perceived as equality, fairness, neutrality, independence, openness, creativity and safety,” says Ml Suliman.

Ml Waja said, “People at times have the apprehension that if you wear white, it gets dirty very quickly, but be that as it may, white is a very famous colour.”

Green is a happy colour, enabling you to feel bliss and joy. Colour of nature.

“Nabi [SAW] praised the garment with green stripes. The world is green and lush,” says Ml Suliman.

Black also featured, says Ml Suliman, “Nabi [SAW] had a black turban.”

Colours are like a form of non-verbal communication. Green signifies a renewal of energy, and it balances between your head and heart. Between your intelligence and emotions.

Black signifies power.

“The black cloth around the Ka’bah. Black absorbs negative energy and gives you a sense of mystery and discipline. They also say when black is combined with white that it avoids giving a depressive effect, says Ml Suliman.”
