Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose
Finding Peace Through Remembrance – The Heart’s True Sanctuary
We have spoken about sincerity, about small deeds with big hearts, about aligning ourselves with Allah’s pleasure, about the Quran as our companion, and about the power of dhikr. Now, we arrive at the destination of it all. We arrive at peace.
What is it that every human being on this earth is searching for? Regardless of wealth, status, or nationality, every soul is on a quest for one thing: peace. Inner peace. Peace of mind. Peace of heart. We see millionaires who are anxious. We see celebrities who are depressed. We see people with every worldly comfort who cannot sleep at night. Why? Because they are looking for peace in the wrong places.
Allah ﷻ tells us exactly where true peace is found. He says:
“الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ”
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13: 28)
This verse is not a suggestion. It is a divine declaration of a universal truth: Peace is found only in the remembrance of Allah.
Think about the word Tama’nīnah used here. It means complete tranquillity, stillness, and contentment. It is the feeling of the heart settling down after a long day of searching. It is the deep breath you take when you finally come home.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ understood this deeply. He made our connection to peace through remembrance so simple that anyone can access it. He taught us that even the simplest phrases carry immense weight. He said:
“لَأَنْ أَقُولَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ”
“That I say ‘Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar’ is more beloved to me than everything the sun has risen upon.” (Muslim)
More beloved than the entire world and everything in it. Why? Because these words connect us to the source of all peace. They remind us of who we are and who Allah is. They anchor us in a reality that does not change when circumstances change.
Consider the state of our hearts when we are anxious. Anxiety comes from feeling out of control, from worrying about the future, from dwelling on the past. Remembrance of Allah brings us back to the present moment and reminds us that Allah is in control. When you say Hasbiyallāh (Allah is sufficient for me), you are releasing your grip on the things you cannot control and placing them in the hands of the One who controls everything.
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a supplication that captures this surrender:
“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ النَّعِيمَ الْمُقِيمَ الَّذِي لَا يَحُولُ وَلَا يَزُولُ”
“O Allah, I ask You for the everlasting bliss that neither changes nor ceases.” (Ibn Majah)
This everlasting bliss is not found in palaces or bank accounts. It is found in the heart that remembers its Lord.
As Ramadhan draws to a close, we must ask ourselves: Have we found this peace? Have we tasted this Tama’nīnah? If we have spent the month fasting, praying, and reading Quran but our hearts are still restless, then we have only scratched the surface. The goal is not just to perform the actions, but to arrive at the state of peace that the actions are meant to produce.
Let us make a firm resolve that Ramadhan will not be the end of our remembrance, but the beginning. Let us commit to carrying this peace with us into every day of the year. Let our tongues be moist with dhikr, our hearts connected to the Mushaf, and our souls anchored in the certainty that Allah is enough.
“أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ”
“Unquestionably, for the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Surah Yunus, 10: 62)
This is the promise. This is the peace. May Allah make us among those who find true tranquillity in His remembrance. Ameen.
