Making the Qur’an a Daily Companion – Part 12

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose

Making the Qur’an a Daily Companion

As we progress through this blessed month, a gentle anxiety may creep into our hearts. We have spent these days immersed in the Quran. We have recited it, reflected upon it, and felt its awakening power. But a question lingers: What happens when Ramadhan ends? Will the Quran once again be placed on the high shelf, only to be taken down next year? Will our connection fade with the fading of the crescent moon?

This is where the renewal of the heart meets its greatest test. It is one thing to have a Ramadhan romance with the Quran. It is another thing entirely to make it a daily companion for the rest of our lives.

The Quran is not a book for a season. It is not a manual to be consulted once a year. It is the daily bread of the soul. It is the air that the heart breathes. Allah (SWT) describes it as:

“شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ”

“The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of the guidance and the criterion.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 185)

Notice: The Quran was revealed in Ramadhan, but it is described as hudan lil-nās — a guidance for mankind — not just for the month. It is a compass for every day, every decision, every moment until we meet our Lord.

Think about the concept of a companion. A true companion is someone you turn to in joy and in sorrow. Someone who advises you when you are confused. Someone who comforts you when you are distressed. Someone who reminds you of the truth when you are about to stray. Is there any companion more deserving of this role than the Quran?

The Prophet ﷺ spoke of the Quran as an intercessor — a friend that will speak on our behalf. He said:

“اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شَفِيعًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ”

“Recite the Quran, for indeed it will come on the Day of Judgment as an intercessor for its companions.” (Muslim)

The word used is aṣḥābih — its companions. Those who kept its company. Those who did not abandon it. The Quran will recognize those who made it a part of their daily lives and will plead for them before Allah.

This is the relationship we must carry beyond Ramadhan.

But how do we do this practically? How do we transition from the intensity of Ramadhan to the consistency of a lifetime? The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.

“أَحَبُّ الْأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ”

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are small.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

So, making the Quran a daily companion does not mean you must recite a full Juz’ every day for the rest of your life. It means establishing a daily relationship — a consistent, manageable, and heartfelt connection.

Here are three practical steps to make the Quran your companion long after the last Taraweeh prayer:

  1. Assign a Daily Portion, No Matter How Small.

The Prophet ﷺ advised Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As RA:

“صُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَاقْرَأِ الْقُرْآنَ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ”

“Fast three days every month and recite the Quran every month.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud)

For some, a month is too long. For others, a day is too much. Find your rhythm. Maybe it’s half a page a day. Maybe it’s one page. Maybe it’s ten minutes after Fajr. The key is daily. Make it a non-negotiable appointment with your Lord. Let it be the first thing your heart tastes in the morning or the last thing it touches before sleep.

  1. Build a Relationship Through Understanding.

A companion is someone you understand. If you recite daily but never know what you are saying, the relationship remains superficial. Allah commands us:

“كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ”

“[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” (Sad, 38: 29)

Use a translation. Read a short authentic Tafseer. Even understanding one verse a day is enough to keep your heart connected. Let the meaning accompany you throughout your day.

  1. Let It Guide Your Actions.

A true companion influences you. When you read a verse about honesty, be honest that day. When you read about patience, practice patience. When you read about gratitude, count your blessings. Let the Quran become the filter through which you see the world and the guide by which you navigate your life. This is how it transforms from a book into a companion.

Respected listeners, Ramadhan will soon leave us. The question is not how much Quran we recited in these thirty days. The question is: Will we let it go? Or will we hold onto it, making it our friend, our advisor, and our intercessor, until we meet again next Ramadhan?

Let us make a covenant with Allah. Let us promise Him that even when the month ends, His book will remain the light of our homes and the companion of our hearts. For indeed, the one who has the Quran as a companion has a friend that will never betray them, never tire of them, and never leave them alone in the darkness of the grave.

May Allah make us among the people of the Quran, those who are His special ones and His close friends. Ameen.
