Giving Quietly and Sincerely – Part 8

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 5 – Transformation: Becoming Who Allah Loves

Giving Quietly and Sincerely

Respected listeners, we are now on the 28th day of Ramadhan. The month is winding down, but the opportunities for reward are still abundant. This morning, my colleagues spoke about charity and generosity of the heart — how giving softens the heart and loosens the grip of the dunya on our souls.

But now, we go deeper. We address not just the act of giving, but how we give. Because the same action can have very different effects on the heart depending on how it is done.

Today, we speak about Giving Quietly and Sincerely.

The Danger of Showing Off

When you give charity, there is a subtle danger that creeps in. The ego whispers: Look at how generous you are. Look at how much you gave. People will admire you. This is riya’ — showing off — and it can destroy the entire reward.

The Prophet ﷺ warned us about those who give to be seen:

“إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ” قَالُوا: وَمَا الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: “الرِّيَاءُ”

“Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk.” They asked: “What is the lesser shirk, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Showing off.” (Ahmad)

Riya’ is dangerous because it is subtle. You can give a thousand rands, but if you gave it so people would praise you, you have lost the reward. You have fed your ego, not your soul.

The Excellence of Hidden Charity

Allah praises those who give secretly. He describes them:

“إِن تُبْدُوا الصَّدَقَاتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِيَ ۖ وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا الْفُقَرَاءَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ”

“If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:271)

Why is hidden charity better? Because it protects your intention. It ensures that only Allah knows what you gave. It trains your heart to seek His pleasure alone.

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that among those who will be shaded on the Day of Judgment is:

“رَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأَخْفَاهَا حَتَّىٰ لَا تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُهُ مَا تُنفِقُ يَمِينُهُ”

“A man who gave charity and concealed it so much that his left hand did not know what his right hand spent.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

This is the level of hidden charity — so secret that you yourself barely register it. This is the giving that purifies the heart.

The Heart That Gives Secretly

What happens to the heart when you give secretly?

It learns to seek Allah alone. When no one knows, you cannot be seeking their praise. You are forced to do it for Him.

It breaks free from people’s opinions. You stop caring what others think. Your worth is no longer tied to their approval.

It experiences true freedom. The one who gives secretly is free—free from the need to impress, free from the trap of reputation, free from the chains of ego.

It draws closer to Allah. Secret deeds create intimacy. When you and Allah share a secret, your bond strengthens.

The Balance: Open and Hidden

This does not mean all charity must be secret. There is a place for open giving — to inspire others, to normalize generosity, to fulfil certain obligations like zakat. The key is intention.

If you give openly to encourage others, that is good. If you give openly so people will praise you, that is destructive. Check your heart before every act.

Practical Steps for Hidden Giving

In these remaining days of Ramadan, challenge yourself:

  1. Give without telling anyone. Not your spouse, not your children, not your friends. Let it be between you and Allah.
  2. Give in ways that cannot be traced. Drop money in a collection box. Pay for someone’s groceries anonymously. Donate online without leaving your name.
  3. Give spontaneously. When you see someone in need, give immediately, without overthinking. The less you plan, the less your ego gets involved.
  4. Give what you love. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَنْ تَصَدَّقَ وَأَنْتَ صَحِيحٌ شَحِيحٌ، تَأْمُلُ الْغِنَىٰ وَتَخْشَى الْفَقْرَ”

“The best charity is to give when you are healthy, reluctant, hoping for wealth and fearing poverty.” (Bukhari)

Giving when it hurts — that is the charity that purifies most.

The Quiet Heart

A heart that gives quietly is a heart that has been renewed. It no longer needs the applause of people. It is satisfied with the gaze of Allah.

As we prepare to leave Ramadhan, cultivate this quiet generosity. Let it become a habit that continues long after the month ends. Let it be one of the ways you carry Ramadhan forward.

May Allah accept our hidden and open charity and purify our hearts through giving. Ameen.
