This morning on Sabahul Muslim’s Media Lens with Ebrahim Deen, the lead story was the Saudi Arabia nuclear agreement, following confirmation that Trump had signed on to the deal.

The agreement is seen as “contentious” and has generated some “paranoia” because it “lacks some of the safeguards” of other agreements. While it has allowed Saudi Arabia to generate nuclear energy domestically and has some legal enrichment capacity, there are no guarantees.

Media coverage has been significant since contemplation of the deal last year. Despite countries like South Korea and Japan having nuclear agreements with the US in place, Saudi being part of the Middle East has caused the issue has come to the fore.

With the current gas and fuel prices at an all-time high, nuclear energy enrichment will endure and is seen as something sustainable. There is a legal need for it globally, and most countries are allowed to practice it. New technology allows for the easy storage of spent uranium, and unlike gas, oil, and fossil fuels, it does not have negative consequences on the environment.

Although this is seen as a threat by the US and Israel, it is difficult to predict the outcome, says Deen, and could “wax and wane,” especially with Netanyahu’s upcoming meeting in the US next week.
