My Lord Nurtures Me

Developing Critical Thinking

Having understood how Allah, our Rabb relates to our daily lives, we will now look at the amazing ways in which Allah nurtures us. One of those ways is Mental Nurturing. In sha Allah, over the next two weeks we will endeavour to get a better understanding of this crucial aspect of nurturing.

One of the greatest blessings from our Lord is the ability to think, reflect, and reason. Unlike other creatures, human beings are endowed with intellect, a gift that allows us to distinguish truth from falsehood, make informed decisions, and seek deeper understanding. My Lord nurtures me by encouraging critical thinking through the Qur’an and Sunnah, guiding me to analyze, question, and reflect upon the world around me. This divine nurturing ensures that I do not follow blindly but instead engage with faith, knowledge, and wisdom.

  1. The Qur’an: A Call to Reflection and Reasoning

The Noble Qur’an is not just a book of guidance; it is a book that invites deep contemplation and intellectual engagement. Throughout its verses, Allah repeatedly calls upon humanity to think, reason, and use their intellect.

Allah says:

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَآ

“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Muhammad 47: 24)

  1. Encouraging Questioning and Inquiry

The Qur’an does not discourage questioning; rather, it invites inquiry and reflection. Allah says:

“And We have certainly diversified in this Qur’an for the people every kind of example. But man, most of all, is argumentative.” (Al-Kahf 18: 54)

This verse reassures us that questioning is a natural part of human thought. Our Lord nurtures us by providing wisdom and knowledge that allows us to ask meaningful questions and seek the truth sincerely.

  1. Signs in Creation: Encouraging Observation and Analysis

Allah invites us to study the world and extract lessons from it.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (Aal-Imran 3: 190)

By reflecting on nature, history, and human experiences, we can develop a deeper awareness of divine wisdom and reality. This nurtures our ability to critically analyze the world through a lens of faith and reason.

  1. The Sunnah: Practical Application of Critical Thinking

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not just a messenger; he was a thinker, strategist, and problem solver. His Sunnah teaches us how to approach challenges with wisdom, patience, and critical analysis.

  1. Encouraging Intellectual Dialogue

The Prophet ﷺ engaged in discussions and encouraged his companions to think deeply.

He once asked Mu’adh ibn Jabal RA how he would judge matters, to which Mu’adh RA replied that he would refer to the Qur’an, then the Sunnah, and if he found no answer, he would use his own reasoning. The Prophet ﷺ approved this method (Tirmidhi 1327).

This example nurtures us by teaching us that reasoning and deduction are essential in making sound judgments.

  1. Seeking Knowledge and Verification

The Prophet ﷺ warned against following information blindly.

“It is enough for a man to prove himself a liar when he narrates everything he hears.” (Muslim 5)

This hadith nurtures our critical thinking by encouraging us to verify information before accepting or spreading it, promoting intellectual responsibility.

  1. Problem-Solving and Adaptability

The Prophet ﷺ approached issues with adaptability and wisdom, showing how critical thinking is necessary for making decisions in different circumstances.

For example, when different people came to him asking for the best deed, he gave different answers based on their situation—prayer for one, helping parents for another, and striving in the cause of Allah for someone else. (Bukhari 2782)

This nurtures us by teaching us that context matters in decision-making, and critical thinking helps apply wisdom correctly.
