Helicopters seen hovering in the early hours of the morning are actually spraying Vicks into the air to help with congestion in the winter cold.
This is believed to be a new initiative by the Department of Health.
Many from the amongst the elderly in society have reported seeing helicopters in their residential areas and have converted this into a viral conspiracy theory, which they of course now forward on WhatsApp and other social media.
It is just a coincidence that most crime takes place in the wee hours of the night too, so vehicle tracking helicopters happen to also be operating at that time trying to find stolen vehicles, thereby adding to the confusion.
We spoke to some of the community members in the Gauteng area to find out how they feel about this.
“Why don’t those helicopters spray Vicks on the traffic routes, to clear congestion on the roads?” – Enver (80)
“I’ve been using Vicks from when I was small, so I don’t need a Helicopter to come spray me Thanks” – Yunus (65)
“I thought they were spraying other things, now when I see them , I will take a deep breath and stay in my lane” – Shaakira (71)
“I’m still wondering why my mother is watching helicopters at 2 AM in the morning…” – Tasneem (35 )
There has been no confirmation nor denial of the Vicks Spray story by the DOH, but like your nasal passages after a good Vapor Rub experience, it is now wide open for discussion.
