Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 4 – Strengthening The Heart: Building a Heart That Lasts
Protecting the Heart During the Last Ten Nights
Laylatul Qadr — the night better than a thousand months — is somewhere in these days. This is the moment we have been preparing for. This is the sprint to the finish line. This is when every believer pours out their heart in worship, hoping to catch that one night that can change their eternity.
But precisely because these nights are so valuable, they are also dangerous. Not dangerous in themselves, but dangerous because of what threatens our worship during them. This morning, we speak about Protecting the Heart During the Last Ten Nights.
The Intensified Attack
When the believer draws close to Allah, Shaytan intensifies his efforts. He does not give up. He knows these nights are your chance to free yourself from the Fire. And he will do everything in his power to rob you of that chance.
The Prophet ﷺ warned us:
“إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنَ ابْنِ آدَمَ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ”
“Indeed, Shaytan flows through the son of Adam like the flow of blood.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
He knows your weaknesses. He knows when you are tired, distracted, or vulnerable. And in these last ten nights, he attacks with full force.
The Greatest Threat: Riya’ (Showing Off)
In the last ten nights, worship becomes visible. People see you at the mosque. People know you are praying late. People notice your devotion. And the ego whispers: They are impressed. They see how spiritual you are.
This is riya’ — showing off. And it is the greatest threat to your worship in these nights. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ” قَالُوا: وَمَا الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: “الرِّيَاءُ”
“Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk.” They asked: “What is the lesser shirk, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Showing off.” (Ahmad)
A single moment of riya’ can empty your worship of its reward. You stand in prayer, but your heart is looking at who is watching. You recite Quran, but you are hoping someone hears. This is poison.
How to Protect Against Riya’
- Make your intention private. Before you begin any act of worship, sit quietly and say to Allah: This is for You alone. I seek no praise from anyone. I seek only Your pleasure.
- Hide your good deeds. Do not announce that you prayed Tahajjud. Do not mention how much Quran you read. Let your worship be between you and Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعَبْدَ التَّقِيَّ الْغَنِيَّ الْخَفِيَّ”
“Indeed, Allah loves the pious servant who is self-sufficient and hidden.” (Muslim)
- Remember that people’s opinions mean nothing. On the Day of Judgment, their praise will not weigh a single gram. Only Allah’s approval matters.
The Threat of Distraction
In these nights, your mind will wander. You will stand in prayer, and suddenly you are thinking about Eid shopping, about work, about family, about everything except Allah. This is natural, but it must be fought.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيُصَلِّي الصَّلَاةَ مَا يُكْتَبُ لَهُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا عُشْرُهَا، تُسْعُهَا، ثُمُنُهَا، سُبُعُهَا، سُدُسُهَا، خُمْسُهَا، رُبُعُهَا، ثُلُثُهَا، نِصْفُهَا”
“A servant may pray and have nothing recorded from it except a tenth, a ninth, an eighth, a seventh, a sixth, a fifth, a quarter, a third, or a half.” (Abu Dawud)
Only the portion you were present for counts. Protect your presence.
How to Protect Against Distraction
- Prepare before worship. Before you begin, remove distractions. Silence your phone. Choose a quiet place. Remind yourself that you are standing before the King of kings.
- Slow down. Do not rush through prayer or Quran. Let each word land. Let each verse penetrate.
- When distracted, return. The moment you notice your mind wandering, gently bring it back. Do not despair. This is the struggle of worship.
The Threat of Burnout
Some people go so hard in the first few nights that they collapse before Laylatul Qadr. They pray for hours, then sleep through the next night. Balance is needed.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّ لِكُلِّ عَمَلٍ شِرَّةً وَلِكُلِّ شِرَّةٍ فَتْرَةً”
“Every deed has a period of enthusiasm, and every period of enthusiasm is followed by a slackening.” (Ahmad)
Pace yourself. Rest during the day so you can pray at night. Eat lightly. Nap if needed. You want to be present for all ten nights, not just the first three.
The Ultimate Protection
The ultimate protection for your heart is constant turning to Allah. Make du’a before every prayer, before every night of worship:
“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ إِيمَانًا لَا يَرْتَدُّ، وَنَعِيمًا لَا يَنْفَدُ، وَمُرَافَقَةَ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي أَعْلَى جَنَّةِ الْخُلْدِ”
“O Allah, I ask You for faith that does not regress, blessings that do not end, and the companionship of Your Prophet Muhammad in the highest Paradise.”
My brothers and sisters, these nights are your opportunity. Protect your heart. Guard your intention. Fight distraction. Pace yourself. And ask Allah to accept.
Do not let it pass you by. Protect your heart. Seek it with all you have.
May Allah protect our hearts and grant us Laylatul Qadr. Ameen.
