Renewing Niyyah Midway Through Ramadhan – Part 18

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose

Renewing Niyyah Midway Through Ramadhan – The Power of a Fresh Start

We find ourselves very quickly heading towards the midway mark of this blessed month. The initial rush of excitement has settled. The newness of fasting has become familiar. And for some of us, there is a danger that our spiritual energy may begin to fade. We started strong, but now the routine threatens to make us complacent.

This is precisely the moment when we need to pause and do something powerful. Something the Prophet ﷺ taught us implicitly through his own practice. We need to renew our Niyyah.

Niyyah is the intention of the heart. It is the spiritual engine that powers every action. The Prophet ﷺ taught us:

“إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى”

“Verily, actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

This hadith is usually recited at the beginning of actions. But its wisdom applies throughout. Just as a car needs refuelling mid-journey, our intentions need renewing midway through Ramadhan.

Why is this renewal so crucial? Because the heart is not static. It fluctuates. It experiences highs and lows. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“إِنَّ قُلُوبَ بَنِي آدَمَ كُلَّهَا بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ كَقَلْبٍ وَاحِدٍ يُصَرِّفُهُ حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ”

“Verily, the hearts of all the children of Adam are between two fingers of the Most Merciful’s fingers, like one heart. He directs them wherever He wills.” (Muslim)

Our hearts are in Allah’s Hands. They turn and change. And because they change, our intentions must be consciously renewed and realigned.

So how do we renew our Niyyah midway through Ramadhan?

  1. Return to the “Why.”

Ask yourself: Why am I fasting? Why am I praying Taraweeh? Why am I reading Quran? Is it just habit? Is it cultural expectation? Or is it for Allah alone? Take a moment to strip away everything except the pure intention. Say in your heart: I am doing this solely for Your pleasure, O Allah. This simple reset can transform a routine action into an act of worship.

  1. Intend More Than Just Fasting.

The beauty of Niyyah is that it can elevate ordinary moments. When you wake for Suhoor, intend it as an act of following the Sunnah. When you feel hungry during the day, intend it as a reminder of those less fortunate. When you control your temper despite irritation, intend it as training your soul for Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“وَلَكِنْ جِهَادٌ وَنِيَّةٌ”

“But (the deeds depend on) effort and intention.” (Bukhari)

With the right intention, even your sleep becomes worship. Even your patience becomes charity.

  1. Repent and Start Fresh.

Perhaps the first half of Ramadhan was not as focused as you wished. Perhaps you missed some prayers or wasted time. Do not let Shaytan convince you that all is lost. The door of repentance is wide open. Allah loves those who turn back to Him. Renew your intention right now, this very moment, and begin the second half with a clean slate.

  1. Set a New Spiritual Goal.

Midway through the month, assess your progress. If you aimed to complete the Quran once, perhaps now intend to complete it with reflection. If you prayed Taraweeh at home, perhaps intend to pray at the mosque. If you gave charity, perhaps intend to give more secretly. Fresh goals revive the heart and give it direction.

The Companions understood this principle deeply. They constantly renewed their intentions. Umar ibn al-Khattab RA famously said:

“إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَلَكِنَّكُمْ تَنْوُونَ مَا شِئْتُمْ”

“Verily, deeds are by intentions, but you can intend whatever you wish.” (Reported in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)

Meaning: The power to redirect your actions is always in your hands.

My brothers and sisters, we are not even halfway through a marathon; we are in a sprint to the finish line. The last ten nights are approaching. Laylatul Qadr, the night better than a thousand months, is ahead of us. Do not meet it with a tired, complacent heart. Meet it with a freshly renewed intention, burning with desire for Allah’s pleasure.

Renew your intention. Purify your heart. And race toward the remaining days with the energy of the first.

May Allah accept from us all, renew our intentions, and grant us the blessings of the last ten nights. Ameen.
