Answering the Call of Allah, One Action at a Time
Responding to Allah in Moments of Ease
Our Hajj theme this year, “Answering the Call of Allah, One Action at a Time,” reminds us that believers are called to Allah not only during hardship, but also during moments of ease. In fact, one of the greatest tests a person can face is not difficulty, but comfort. When life is going well, health is stable, finances are comfortable, and problems seem distant, people can easily become distracted from Allah. Yet Islam teaches believers to remain connected to Allah in every situation — both in hardship and in ease.
It is natural for people to turn to Allah during difficult moments. When someone faces illness, loss, fear, or uncertainty, they often make more dua, pray more sincerely, and seek Allah’s help urgently. Hardship reminds human beings of their weakness and dependence upon Allah. But when life becomes comfortable, people sometimes forget the One who blessed them in the first place.
This is why gratitude is such an important part of faith. Every blessing a person enjoys — health, family, wealth, safety, opportunities, peace, and even simple daily comforts — comes from Allah. Often people become so accustomed to blessings that they stop noticing them. Yet there are countless things people enjoy daily that others may desperately wish for.
Hajj teaches believers this lesson beautifully. Pilgrims in Makkah leave behind many comforts and routines during their journey. Through the physical demands and simplicity of Hajj, many begin appreciating blessings they previously overlooked — a comfortable bed, clean water, family, health, food, and ease in daily life. Sometimes stepping away from comfort helps people recognize how much Allah has already given them.
Responding to Allah in moments of ease means not waiting for a crisis before becoming serious about faith. Some people only reconnect with Allah when life becomes difficult, but the believer strives to worship Allah consistently in all circumstances. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ taught that whoever remembers Allah during times of ease will find Allah’s help during times of hardship.
One of the greatest ways to respond to Allah during ease is through gratitude. Gratitude in Islam is not only words spoken by the tongue like “Alhamdulillah,” although that is important. True gratitude is shown through actions. A person grateful for health uses their strength in ways pleasing to Allah. A person grateful for wealth gives charity and helps others. A person grateful for time uses it productively instead of wasting life on meaningless distractions.
Another challenge of ease is that comfort can sometimes create carelessness. When life feels stable, people may delay repentance, neglect Salaah, or become overly attached to worldly pleasures. They may assume they will have plenty of time later to improve themselves spiritually. But life can change suddenly. Islam encourages believers not to become spiritually asleep during moments of comfort.
The lives of the Prophets AS teach this balance beautifully. Even when they experienced blessings and success, they remained humble, grateful, and devoted to Allah. Nabi Sulaiman عليه السلام, despite having immense kingdom and power, constantly acknowledged that his blessings came from Allah. He did not allow comfort or authority to make him arrogant or forgetful.
This is an important lesson today because modern life often encourages people to chase comfort above everything else. Society frequently measures success by wealth, luxury, status, and convenience. Yet Islam reminds believers that worldly ease is temporary. True success is not simply enjoying blessings, but using those blessings in ways that please Allah.
Ultimately, moments of ease should bring believers closer to Allah, not further away from Him. The believer understands that blessings are not guarantees of Allah’s pleasure, but opportunities to show gratitude, sincerity, and obedience.
The true test is not whether we remember Allah only when life becomes difficult, but whether we remain connected to Him when life feels comfortable.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest signs of sincere faith — continuing to answer Allah’s call not only in moments of hardship, but also in moments of ease, one grateful action at a time.
