When the Heart Hears the Call Before the Body

Our Hajj theme this year, “Answering the Call of Allah, One Action at a Time,” reminds us that the journey to Allah does not always begin with physical movement. Sometimes the heart responds long before the body does. There are many people who may never yet have travelled to Makkah, but their hearts already feel connected to the call of Allah. They long for closeness to Him, they feel moved by reminders, and they begin changing their lives sincerely for His sake. This is what happens when the heart hears the call before the body.

One of the most beautiful aspects of faith is that guidance begins internally. Before actions change outwardly, something often shifts inside the heart. A person may suddenly feel more conscious of Allah, more uncomfortable with certain sins, or more drawn toward worship and repentance. These moments are not random. Often, they are signs that Allah is awakening the heart and inviting it closer to Him.

Many people imagine that spiritual transformation only begins in major moments — such as standing on the plains of Arafah or performing Tawaf around the Ka’bah. While those moments are powerful, the journey toward Allah often starts much earlier and much more quietly. It may begin with a verse of the Qur’an that touches the heart deeply. It may begin with hearing the Talbiyah and feeling emotional. It may begin with a sincere dua made late at night or a moment of reflection during hardship.

Sometimes a person physically remains in the same place, yet spiritually begins travelling toward Allah. Their priorities slowly change. Worship becomes more meaningful. Certain distractions begin losing importance. The heart starts searching for peace in remembrance of Allah rather than in worldly things.

This is important because not everyone will perform Hajj immediately, and some may never have the opportunity. Yet the spiritual lessons of Hajj are not limited only to those physically present there. The believer whose heart sincerely responds to Allah can still experience transformation, longing, humility, repentance, and closeness to Allah wherever they are.

Hajj itself teaches that the heart is central to worship. Millions of pilgrims perform the same rituals outwardly, but the true value of Hajj depends on sincerity, humility, and the condition of the heart. A person may physically complete every action, but without sincerity and spiritual reflection, the deeper purpose of the journey can be lost.

This is why Islam places so much emphasis on the heart. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ taught that if the heart is sound, the entire person becomes sound. The heart influences intentions, actions, character, and relationships with Allah and people.

When the heart hears Allah’s call, signs of change begin appearing gradually. A person may start protecting their Salaah more carefully. They may become more patient, more grateful, or more conscious of their speech and actions. They may begin seeking beneficial knowledge or making sincere Tawbah. These changes may seem small outwardly, but spiritually they are enormous because they show the heart responding to Allah.

One of the beautiful things about Hajj season is that even Muslims not travelling often feel spiritually moved. Seeing pilgrims leave for Hajj, hearing the Talbiyah, and reflecting on the legacy of Nabi Ibrahim عليه السلام awakens longing in many hearts. It reminds believers that life itself is a journey toward Allah and that every person is being called in different ways.

The heart hearing the call before the body also teaches believers not to underestimate small beginnings. Some people delay change because they feel they are not ready for a major transformation. But Islam teaches that closeness to Allah is built gradually. One sincere prayer, one act of repentance, one small sacrifice, or one step toward improvement can begin changing the heart completely.

Ultimately, the greatest journeys begin within. Before the feet move toward obedience, the heart first turns toward Allah. Before the tongue recites “Labbayk,” the soul first responds internally to the call of its Creator.

And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful realities of faith — that even before a believer reaches the sacred lands, the journey may already have begun within the heart, one sincere action at a time.
