Softening the Heart Through Giving – Part 9

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 5 – Transformation: Becoming Who Allah Loves

Softening the Heart Through Giving

My dear brothers and sisters, we are now on the 28th day of Ramadhan. The end is approaching, but the opportunities for heart renewal are still here. We have spoken about charity and the importance of giving quietly and sincerely. But now, we address the deeper transformation: how giving actually softens the heart.

Because a renewed heart is a soft heart. It is a heart that feels, that cares, that reaches out. And one of the most powerful ways to cultivate that softness is through giving.

The Hardness That Comes from Hoarding

When we cling to what we have, the heart hardens. We become protective, fearful, and closed. We worry about losing what we own. We forget that everything we have is a trust from Allah, not a possession to guard jealously.

Allah warns:

“كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ لَا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ * وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ * وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا * وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا”

“No! But you do not honour the orphan, and you do not encourage one another to feed the poor, and you consume inheritance devouring completely, and you love wealth with immense love.” (Surah Al-Fajr, 89: 17-20)

Love of wealth hardens the heart. It makes us neglect others. It closes us in on ourselves.

The Softening That Comes from Giving

When you give, something shifts inside you. You open your hand, and your heart opens with it. You release what you hold, and you feel lighter. You see the face of someone in need, and your heart connects to their pain.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ”

“Be merciful to those on earth, and the One in heaven will be merciful to you.” (Tirmidhi)

Giving is mercy in action. And mercy softens the heart.

The Prophet’s Example

The Prophet ﷺ had the softest heart, and his generosity was limitless. He never turned away a beggar empty-handed. He gave until he had nothing left. His giving kept his heart tender and connected to his ummah.

But his generosity was legendary. He gave and gave, and his heart remained soft.

Giving as Heart Medicine

If your heart feels hard — if you cannot cry, if you feel distant from Allah, if worship feels heavy — give charity. Give until you feel something. Give to someone who moves you. Give secretly, so only Allah knows. Watch what it does to your heart.

The scholars say: Charity is medicine for the heart. It softens what is hard. It awakens what is asleep. It connects what is disconnected.

Practical Steps

  1. Give daily. Even a small amount. Even a smile. Even a kind word. Let giving become a habit that keeps your heart soft.
  2. Give to those who move you. Find someone whose situation touches your heart. Give to them. Let their need open your compassion.
  3. Give and then reflect. After you give, pause. Notice how your heart feels. Lighter? Softer? Closer to Allah? This awareness will encourage you to give more.
  4. Give in the remaining nights. The last nights of Ramadhan are still here. Do not let them pass without giving. Let your charity be among your final acts of this blessed month.

The Soft Heart

A soft heart is a gift from Allah. It feels the joy of obedience and the pain of sin. It cares for others. It turns to its Lord easily. It is the heart that will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.

Giving cultivates this softness. Give, and let your heart be renewed.

May Allah soften our hearts through giving and make us among those who are easy in this life and the next. Ameen.
