Successful drug bust in Chatsworth uncovers illicit drug lab

In a recent operation in Chatsworth, South African police faced unexpected challenges when confronted by aggressive pit bulls during a drug bust. The operation, part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related activities in Durban, resulted in the discovery of a clandestine drug lab and the confiscation of a substantial amount of narcotics.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda discussed the operation on Radio Islam International

The police’s intelligence, engaged in day-to-day duties, identified a suspicious house on Oceanview Road, leading to several days of surveillance. Convinced of illicit activities, they applied for and received a search warrant from the court. Upon approaching the premises, officers encountered fierce pit bulls guarding the house, necessitating self-defence measures, including the injury of one of the animals.

Once inside, the police uncovered an illegal drug lab operated by two suspects. The haul included a variety of drugs, including heroin and cocaine powder, crystal meth, Ecstasy and Mandrax tablets, and approximately 1,6 million empty capsules. Machinery used in drug manufacturing was also found. The estimated value of the bust is R2,6 million.

Colonel Netshiunda addressed the challenges of maintaining secrecy in such operations, emphasising the importance of tight-lipped teamwork to prevent leaks that could compromise the mission. He also spoke about ongoing investigations, expressing the belief that the operation involved more than the initially apprehended suspects, hinting at a potential mastermind orchestrating the drug trade.

With the holiday season underway, law enforcement is intensifying efforts to combat drug abuse. Special attention is being given to the illicit drug trade during parties, music festivals, and events. The police have a dedicated team focusing on disrupting drug manufacturing operations rather than just apprehending individuals with small quantities of illegal substances.

Colonel Netshiunda assured that, despite the challenges faced, the police are committed to ensuring a safe holiday season by implementing proactive measures, including stopping and searching parties to prevent drug-related activities. Ongoing investigations aim to penetrate deeper into the drug trade network, with the ultimate goal of dismantling the entire operation.
