A Legacy That Lives On – Part 4

Sahabiyyah RA of African Descent

A Legacy That Lives On

As we conclude our series marking the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, we have spent the week reflecting on the remarkable life of one of Islam’s most beloved women — Umm Ayman (Barakah bint Tha’labah رضي الله عنها).

We have learnt that she was much more than a companion of the Prophet ﷺ. She was his caregiver in childhood, one of the earliest believers in Islam, a woman who endured hardship with patience, migrated for the sake of Allah, and remained steadfast in her faith through every challenge she faced.

Today, we ask a simple but important question:

What is Umm Ayman’s legacy, and what can we learn from her today?

When we think of greatness, we often think of people who changed the world through speeches, positions of authority or public achievements. Yet Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها teaches us that some of the greatest legacies are built quietly — through service, sincerity and unwavering devotion to Allah.

  • She did not seek recognition.
  • She did not pursue fame.
  • She did not look for praise.

Instead, she devoted her life to caring for others, supporting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and remaining true to her faith, even when it required sacrifice.

Perhaps that is why her legacy has endured for more than fourteen centuries.

One of the most beautiful qualities of Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها was her deep emotional connection to the Prophet ﷺ.

After the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) said to Umar ibn Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه):

“Let us visit Umm Ayman just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit her.”

When they arrived, they found her weeping.

They gently asked her why she was crying. They reminded her that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger ﷺ.

Her response is one of the most touching moments in Islamic history.

She said that she was not crying because she did not know that the Prophet ﷺ had gone to something better. Rather, she was crying because the revelation from the heavens had now ceased.

SubhanAllah.

Think about that for a moment.

Her greatest sorrow was not personal loss alone — it was that the Noble Qur’an was no longer being revealed and that this unique connection between the heavens and the earth had come to an end.

Such was the depth of her faith.

Her words moved Abu Bakr and Umar (رضي الله عنهما) to tears, and together they wept.

This incident tells us everything we need to know about Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها.

Her heart was attached to Allah.

Her love for the Prophet ﷺ was rooted in her love for the message he brought.

Even in grief, her concern was for Islam.

Another remarkable aspect of her legacy is that she reminds us of the importance of honouring those who serve quietly.

In every family, every community and every organisation, there are people whose efforts often go unnoticed. They may not stand in the spotlight, but they hold families together, nurture children, support communities and strengthen institutions through countless acts of kindness.

Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها represents all of these people.

She teaches us that no sincere act performed for the sake of Allah is ever insignificant.

Whether we are parents raising children, teachers educating young minds, volunteers serving our communities or simply neighbours helping one another, every sincere act has value in the sight of Allah.

As we commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, Umm Ayman (رضي الله عنها) stands as a timeless example of dignity, faith and excellence.

Her African heritage was part of her identity, but it was never what defined her worth. Islam honoured her because of her taqwa, her compassion, her loyalty and her service.

In a world that often judges people by appearance, wealth or social status, Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها reminds us of the standard that truly matters.

The Prophet ﷺ loved and honoured her not because of where she came from, but because of who she was.

That is one of the most beautiful lessons Islam offers humanity.
