My Lord Nurtures Me

Protection and Healing (Physical Nurturing)

Our Lord, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has created the human body with intricate systems for protection and healing, ensuring our survival and well-being. Allah not only provides external means of safety but also instils within us natural defence mechanisms that protect us from harm and aid in recovery when we fall ill. The Qur’an and Sunnah repeatedly highlight how Allah nurtures us by shielding us from dangers and equipping our bodies with the ability to heal. Allah says:

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.” (Ash-Shu’ara 26: 80)

Recognizing these divine signs within our physical existence strengthens our faith, gratitude, and trust in our Lord’s care.

  1. The Body’s Built-in Protection: The Immune System

One of the greatest signs of Allah’s nurturing is the immune system, a complex network that defends the body from harmful pathogens. Allah says:

“Indeed, We created man from a drop of fluid, mingling it so that We may test him, and We made him hearing and seeing.” (Al-Insan 76: 2)

How Allah nurtures us through immunity:

  • White blood cells detect and destroy harmful bacteria and viruses.
  • The body remembers past infections, making future responses faster and stronger.
  • Fever and inflammation are natural defence mechanisms to fight infections.

Without conscious effort, our body is constantly defending us from illnesses—a sign of Allah’s mercy and nurturing care.

  1. The Skin: A Protective Barrier

The skin is one of the most important shields Allah has given us. It protects us from environmental hazards, infections, and dehydration. Allah says:

“We have certainly created man in the best of stature.” (At-Tin 95: 4)

How Allah nurtures us through our skin:

  • Acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing harmful substances from entering the body.
  • Contains pain receptors to warn us of dangers like extreme heat or sharp objects.
  • Repairs itself by regenerating new cells when injured.

Our skin is a constant reminder of Allah’s wisdom, allowing us to function safely in the world.

  1. The Healing Power of the Body

Allah has instilled within us self-healing abilities that allow our bodies to recover from injuries and illnesses. The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَنْزَلَ الدَّاءَ وَالدَّوَاءَ وَجَعَلَ لِكُلِّ دَاءٍ دَوَاءً

“For every disease, Allah has sent down a cure.” (Abu Dawood 3874)

Ways Allah nurtures us through healing:

  • Wounds clot and heal naturally through blood platelets.
  • Broken bones repair themselves over time.
  • Damaged cells regenerate to restore bodily functions.

Even modern medicine relies on the body’s natural healing processes, highlighting Allah’s wisdom in His creation.

  1. Sleep: The Divine Reset for the Body

Sleep is a gift from Allah that allows our body to rest, recover, and strengthen itself.  Allah says:

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

“And We made your sleep a means of rest.” (An-Naba 78: 9)

How sleep nurtures us physically:

  • Boosts immune function, helping to fight infections.
  • Repairs muscles and tissues after physical exertion.
  • Regulates hormones that control stress, growth, and metabolism.

By granting us sleep, Allah ensures our physical and mental rejuvenation, allowing us to function optimally.

Allah, in His boundless mercy, has given us systems of protection and healing that allow us to live healthy, resilient lives. From the immune system and skin’s defence to the power of sleep, food, and medical treatment, every aspect of our body is designed to protect and restore itself.

By recognizing these blessings, we are reminded that Allah alone is Al-Hafiz (The Protector) and Ash-Shafi (The Healer), constantly nurturing us and ensuring our well-being.
