The Battle Within – Part 4

Muhammad ﷺ: Humanity’s Compass in a Sea of Chaos

THE CHAOS WITHIN

The Battle Within – Mastering Ourselves in a World That Encourages Us to Follow Every Feeling

We often talk about the chaos happening around us.

  • The arguments.
  • The division.
  • The anger.
  • The outrage.
  • The constant conflict.

But perhaps there is another kind of chaos that we don’t talk about enough:

The chaos within ourselves.

Because sometimes the biggest battle isn’t between us and another person.

It’s between us and ourselves.

  • We know we shouldn’t say something — but we say it anyway.
  • We know we shouldn’t react — but we react.
  • We know we should forgive — but our ego won’t let us.
  • We know we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others — but we do.
  • We know we should be grateful — but we’re constantly looking at what someone else has.

And perhaps this is one of the greatest challenges of modern life: we are constantly being encouraged to follow our feelings rather than control them.

  • If you’re angry, express it.
  • If you’re offended, respond immediately.
  • If you want something, get it.
  • If someone hurts you, hurt them back.
  • If someone succeeds, compete with them.
  • If you feel like saying something, post it.

But the Prophetic example gives us a very different approach. Muhammad ﷺ showed us that strength isn’t simply the ability to overpower someone else. True strength is having control over yourself.

And think about how relevant that is today. We have people losing friendships over a WhatsApp message. Families falling out over arguments. People destroying relationships because they couldn’t control their anger for a few seconds. And social media has made this even more difficult.

  • We can react instantly.
  • We can post instantly.
  • We can share instantly.
  • We can judge instantly.

But perhaps one of the greatest lessons from the Prophetic character is the power of pausing.

  • Not every emotion needs to become an action.
  • Not every thought needs to become a statement.
  • Not every disagreement needs to become a battle.
  • And not every offence needs to become revenge.

This doesn’t mean that we don’t acknowledge our emotions.

The Prophet ﷺ experienced sadness, disappointment, anger and grief.

The lesson is not “don’t feel.”

The lesson is:

“Don’t allow every feeling to control you.”

And then there is another battle that is perhaps even harder to recognise:

the battle with the ego.

Sometimes we don’t want justice.

We want to be right.

Sometimes we don’t want reconciliation.

We want the other person to admit that they were wrong.

Sometimes we don’t want forgiveness.

We want them to suffer because they hurt us.

And the Prophetic model challenges us to ask:

What is my ego doing to my relationships?

So perhaps the battle we need to win today isn’t always the battle against someone else.

Sometimes it’s the battle against the worst version of ourselves.

And when we learn to master ourselves, we become better husbands and wives, better parents, better children, better friends, better colleagues and better members of society.

Because a world that learns to control its anger, humble its ego, restrain its desires and forgive others becomes a very different world.

And perhaps that is where the journey from chaos to clarity begins:

Not by changing everyone around us—but by beginning with ourselves.
