The Women Who Shaped Us

As we come to the end of our Women’s Day theme, “The Women Who Shaped Us,” we’ve spent this week looking at the women who have influenced our lives, the women whose sacrifices often go unnoticed, the women who shape communities, and the young women who will shape our future.

Today, let’s talk about legacy.

Because every woman leaves something behind.

It may not be money, fame or an award.

Sometimes the greatest legacy is simply the people she influenced.

A mother leaves her values in her children.

A grandmother leaves wisdom with her grandchildren.

A teacher leaves knowledge in her students.

A woman who encourages someone during a difficult time may give that person the strength to keep going.

And often, we don’t realise the impact someone has had on us until many years later.

Think about something your mother told you when you were young.

At the time, it may have seemed like ordinary advice.

But years later, you find yourself repeating those same words to your own children.

That’s legacy.

Our Islamic history gives us beautiful examples of women whose influence continued long after their time.

Khadijah رضي الله عنها left a legacy of faith, strength and support.

Aisha رضي الله عنها left a legacy of knowledge that continues to benefit Muslims today.

Their lives remind us that influence doesn’t end when a person is no longer with us.

Their good continues through the people they touched.

And perhaps that’s something we should all ask ourselves:

What are we leaving behind?

When people remember us, will they remember what we owned?

Or will they remember how we treated them?

Will they remember our achievements?

Or the people we helped along the way?

Because we don’t always know the impact of our actions.

A kind word may have given someone hope.

A teacher’s encouragement may have changed a student’s future.

A mother’s sacrifice may have given her child opportunities she never had.

And a woman’s example may inspire another young woman years later.

So today, think about the woman who shaped you.

What did she teach you?

What quality did she pass on to you?

And most importantly:

What part of her legacy are you carrying forward?

Because the story doesn’t end with us.

Someone shaped us.

Now it’s our turn to shape someone else.

So to every woman who has ever wondered whether her efforts mattered:

They did.

To every mother, grandmother, teacher, sister, wife, mentor and community worker whose contribution often goes unnoticed:

You have made a difference and your reward is truly with Allah alone.
