Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose
The Quran as a Heart-Awakener
So, we have been on a journey of renewal. We have spoken about the Sincerity that purifies our actions, the Small Deeds done with a Big Heart that carry immense weight, and the importance of Aligning our Hearts with Allah’s Pleasure. But there remains another question: How? How do we achieve this sincerity? How do we make our hearts big? How do we find the direction of Allah’s pleasure?
The answer has been with us all along, sent down as a mercy, a guidance, and a healing. The answer is the Quran.
This morning we speak about The Quran as a Heart-Awakener.
Allah ﷻ describes this book in a verse that should make every single one of us pause and reflect. He says:
“يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ”
“O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord, and healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Surah Yunus, 10: 57)
Notice the precision of this verse. Allah calls the Quran a maw’izah — an admonition, a reminder that wakes us up. But then He describes it as shifā’un limā fī aṣ-ṣudūr — a healing for what is in the breasts. Not a healing for the body, but a healing for the heart. The heart, that organ which, if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt.
Our hearts, over time, accumulate spiritual diseases. They become hard. They become heedless. They become attached to the dunya. They feel restless, anxious, and empty. Modernity offers countless remedies for this restlessness — entertainment, distractions, materialism — but none of them work. They are like applying a bandage to a deep wound without cleaning it. The infection remains.
The Quran is different. It is the direct speech of Allah. And just as our physical bodies were created by Allah and respond best to the physical nourishment He provided, our souls were created by Allah and respond only to the spiritual nourishment of His words.
Think of the heart as a barren, dry land. It is cracked, hard, and lifeless. Then, the rain comes. The rain seeps into the cracks, softens the earth, and suddenly, life bursts forth. Greenery appears. Flowers bloom. This is the Quran. Allah says:
“اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ”
“Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39: 23)
This is the description of a heart that is alive. It reacts. It trembles with awe, and then it finds peace. This is the renewal we are seeking!
So how do we make the Quran a heart-awakener in this Ramadhan? It is not just about finishing the book. It is about letting the book finish us — our egos, our desires, our heedlessness.
Here are three keys to unlocking the Quran as a healing for your heart:
- Listen with Presence.
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ would cry during Quran recitation, not because they were sad, but because the truth of the words penetrated their hearts. When the verses about Paradise were recited, they would long for it. When the verses about Hell were recited, they would shudder. This happened because they were present. They weren’t just moving their lips; their hearts were engaged. When you pray Taraweeh tonight, imagine Allah is speaking directly to you. Because He is.
- Ponder, Don’t Just Pass.
Allah commands us:
“أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا”
“Then do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Surah Muhammad, 47: 24)
A single verse pondered with understanding can transform a person more than a whole Juz’ read mechanically. Take one verse a day. Sit with it. What is Allah asking of you? What promise is He giving you? What warning is He sending you? Let it sink deep.
- Cry, or at least try to.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ وَابْكُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَبْكُوا فَتَبَاكَوْا”
“Recite the Quran and weep. If you cannot weep, then pretend to weep.” (Ibn Majah)
This is not about acting. It is about softening the heart. Even if the tears don’t come, the effort to feel the weight of the words softens the ground, preparing it for the rain of mercy.
This Ramadan, do not let the Quran be just a book you finish. Let it be the water that revives your dead heart. Let it be the light that illuminates the darkness within. Let it be the awakening call that pulls you from the slumber of this world into the presence of your Lord.
May Allah make the Quran the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests, and the remover of our sorrows. Ameen.
