When Allah calls you to change – Part 3

Answering the Call of Allah, One Action at a Time

When Allah calls you to change

Our theme for this Hajj season, “Answering the Call of Allah, One Action at a Time,” reminds us that every believer is constantly being invited toward something greater. Sometimes Allah calls us toward worship, sometimes toward sacrifice, and sometimes toward change. Change is not always easy. Human beings naturally become comfortable with routines, habits, and familiar ways of living. Yet throughout life, Allah calls us to grow, improve, leave behind sins, and move closer to Him. The real question is not whether Allah calls us — because He constantly does — but whether we are willing to respond.

One of the most powerful realities of Islam is that Allah never leaves a person without guidance. Through the Qur’an, through the teachings of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, through life experiences, hardships, reminders, and even moments of reflection, Allah continuously calls people back to Him. Sometimes that call comes softly through a verse that touches the heart. Sometimes it comes through a difficult test that shakes a person awake. Sometimes it comes through guilt after a sin, or through a sudden realization that life is moving too quickly without purpose.

Many people think change begins with dramatic moments, but often it starts quietly. A person may suddenly feel uncomfortable continuing with certain habits. Someone who once neglected Salah begins feeling drawn toward prayer. Another person may realise that anger, dishonesty, arrogance, or unhealthy influences are damaging their relationship with Allah. These moments are not random. Often, they are signs that Allah is inviting the heart toward something better.

The story of the Prophets teaches us this repeatedly. Nabi Ibrahim عليه السلام answered Allah’s call by leaving behind his homeland and idols. Nabi Musa عليه السلام answered Allah’s call despite fear and uncertainty. Nabi Yunus عليه السلام turned back to Allah after realizing his mistake. Even the companions of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ transformed completely after Islam entered their hearts. They were not perfect people from the beginning, but they responded when Allah guided them.

One of the biggest misunderstandings people have about change is believing they must become perfect instantly. This often discourages people before they even begin. Islam does not demand overnight transformation; rather, it encourages sincere and consistent effort. That is why our theme is so meaningful: “One Action at a Time.” A person changes step by step. One prayer at a time. One good habit at a time. One sincere repentance at a time.

Shaytan, however, works hard to prevent people from changing. He whispers thoughts like: “You are too sinful,” “You can start later,” or “What’s the point? You’ll fail again.” But Islam teaches the exact opposite. Allah’s mercy is always open. No matter how far someone has drifted, Allah welcomes those who sincerely return to Him. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds believers not to despair of Allah’s mercy.

In fact, some of the best moments in a believer’s life begin with sincere repentance. A person who turns back to Allah after years of mistakes can become even stronger in faith than before. Why? Because they now recognize their dependence upon Allah. They understand the emptiness of distance from Him and the peace found in obedience.

When Allah calls you to change, there is usually sacrifice involved. Sometimes you must leave behind certain friendships, environments, habits, or desires. Change can feel uncomfortable because growth often requires letting go of things that once felt normal. But every sacrifice made for Allah is rewarded with something better. A person who leaves a sin for Allah’s sake does not lose — they gain closeness to Allah, peace of heart, and spiritual strength.

This is beautifully reflected in Hajj itself. Pilgrims leave behind comfort, routines, luxury, and worldly distractions to answer Allah’s call in Makkah. They wear simple clothing, stand equally before Allah, and dedicate themselves entirely to worship. Hajj teaches believers that transformation requires effort, humility, and sincerity.

When Allah calls you to change, it is not because He wants to burden you. It is because He wants goodness for you. Allah knows who we can become if we sincerely turn to Him. Every act of obedience strengthens the soul, every sin abandoned purifies the heart, and every sincere effort draws a person closer to Allah.

So when that call comes — through a reminder, hardship, verse, or moment of reflection — do not ignore it. Respond to it. Even if the steps feel small. Even if the journey feels difficult. Because every sincere step toward Allah matters.
