Friends for Life
Why Friendship Matters More Than Ever
This week, as we commemorate International Day of Friendship on the 30th of July, we’re embarking on a special journey together with our theme: “Friends for Life – The People We Choose, The People Who Shape Us.”
Friendship is one of life’s greatest blessings. While we don’t get to choose our family, we do get to choose our friends, and those friendships often become some of the most influential relationships we will ever have. They celebrate with us in moments of joy, stand beside us through our struggles, challenge us when we’re wrong, and remind us of our strengths when we’ve forgotten them ourselves.
Yet, despite living in an age where we’re more connected than ever before, many people have never felt more alone.
We have thousands of followers on social media, hundreds of contacts on our phones, and endless ways to communicate instantly. Yet studies around the world continue to show rising levels of loneliness, especially among young people. This tells us something important: being connected is not the same as belonging, and having many acquaintances is not the same as having genuine friends.
Real friendship cannot be measured by the number of likes on a post or the length of a contact list. It’s measured by trust, loyalty, kindness, and the willingness to stand by someone when life becomes difficult.
Think back to your own life for a moment.
Who are the people who stood beside you during your happiest moments? More importantly, who remained beside you during your darkest days? Those are often the friendships that shape us the most.
Many of us can remember a teacher, a neighbour, a colleague, or a childhood friend whose encouragement changed the direction of our lives. Sometimes a single conversation, a word of support, or simply having someone believe in us makes all the difference.
Friendship has a remarkable impact on our wellbeing too. Good friends reduce stress, provide emotional support, improve our mental health, and even encourage healthier lifestyles. When we know someone genuinely cares about us, life’s burdens often become easier to carry.
But friendship is not only about what we receive.
It’s equally about what we give.
A healthy friendship is built on mutual respect, honesty, patience, forgiveness, and generosity. It requires us to listen without judgement, to celebrate another person’s success without jealousy, and to offer sincere advice with compassion when it’s needed.
One of the greatest lessons we can learn is that being a good friend is often more important than simply finding one.
From an Islamic perspective, friendship holds a special place. Allah reminds us in the Qur’an that close friends on the Day of Judgement may become enemies to one another, except those who were mindful of Allah and encouraged one another towards righteousness. This reminds us that the best friendships are those that bring us closer to goodness, sincerity, and our Creator.
The life of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ gives us beautiful examples of friendship. His relationship with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (RA) was built on unwavering trust, loyalty, sacrifice, and love for the sake of Allah. During the Hijrah, Abu Bakr (RA) accompanied the Prophet ﷺ through one of the most dangerous journeys in Islamic history, demonstrating what true friendship looks like. Their bond wasn’t based on wealth, status, or convenience — it was built upon faith, sincerity, and shared purpose.
There is also a beautiful hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ said:
“A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a friend.”
This timeless advice reminds us that the company we keep quietly shapes our character. Our friends influence the way we speak, the values we hold, the habits we develop, and even the goals we pursue. That’s why choosing friends wisely is one of the most important decisions we can make — a subject we’ll explore further tomorrow.
As we begin this journey together, I’d like to leave you with a simple question:
When was the last time you thanked a friend for simply being there?
Not because they gave you something. Not because they solved a problem. But because their presence has made your life richer.
Perhaps today is the perfect opportunity to send a message, make a phone call, or visit someone who has walked beside you through life’s journey. Friendships, like gardens, flourish when they are cared for.
